The neighborhood of Echo Park in Los Angeles was completely foreign to me when I began reading, but felt a real connection to the people and the place when I finished. From day laborers to housekeepers to busboys, the reader is drawn into the world of Mexican American immigrants. I loved that each of the chapters could stand alone as a story, but also the power of the connections between each character's story was incredible. What a fantastic debut!

Ok, so I usually can figure out what's happened about halfway through a mystery. Not with this one. Sophie Hannah has woven such a complex and mystifying novel, it will keep you not only guessing, but literally trying to wrap your head around what could possibly be going on. Ruth Bussey is a woman with a secret past. Her boyfriend, Aidan Seed, also has a secret that he shares with her: that he killed a woman named Mary Trelease years ago. The catch? Ruth knows Mary Trelease and she is alive. And so begins a tale that will keep you reading late into the night...

The first two books in this young adult trilogy are well written, action-packed, and full of suspense. A futuristic world with televised fights to the death and evil leaders is paired with tales of heroism and survival.
