On exhibit this month at Bartleby’s Books on Main Street in Wilmington are landscapes of Southern Vermont in acrylic by Mary Procter and Bill Matuszeski. A husband/wife team, Mary and Bill split their time between Washington DC and Whitingham, where they have a home on Lake Clara. They have participated in juried shows and won prizes throughout the DC area, and participate each year in Vermont Open Studio days. This is their first show in Wilmington. Paintings include the Whitingham General Store, Mt. Haystack, and the view to the east from Upper Dover Road. Summer hours at Bartleby’s are 10-8 daily.
Start: 5:00 pm
On Tuesday, August 28th at 5:00pm Bartleby's commemorates the one year anniversary of Tropical Storm Irene with a fundraiser. Author Yvonne Daley, will share her new book, A MIGHTY STORM, STORIES OF RESILIENCE AFTER IRENE, with all procedes being donated to flood relief funds. In the fall of 2011, Vermont journalist Yvonne Daley wrote and edited
A Mighty Storm: Stories of Resilience After Irene, a collection of
stories and photographs about Tropical Storm Irene’s path of destruction
throughout Vermont. To compile stories first-hand, Daley hiked into many communities made islands from flooding and spent time with
homeowners who had lost their homes and captured the rebuilding of Vermont as it happened.
In this collaboration between the Rutland Herald, the Times Argus and Shire Press,
Daley and others recreate the spirit of resilience and creativity that Vermonters exhibited in
the wake of such overwhelming disaster and celebrates those who lost their lives in the storm.Daley wrote, “From Wilmington to Waterbury, the Deerfield River
to Lake Champlain, the storm transformed Vermont. And in the following
months, Vermonters themselves.” Daley will read
several pieces from the book at Bartleby's and talk about the powerful
stories of loss and resiliency that she encountered as she traveled the
state. Copies of A MIGHTY STORM will be for
sale, with proceeds earmarked for special funds for local residents and
businesses that suffered losses from Irene.
Stop by Bartleby's to meet Yvonne and discuss your experiences if
you'd like. There will still be time to get a bite to eat before heading
to the candle light service of remembrance at 7:30pm.
